THE HAPPIEST PEOPLE ON EARTH?

Earlier this month the American talk show host Oprah Winfrey visited Copenhagen on the occasion of the International Olympic Committee's congress which took place in the Danish capital from the 1st to the 9th of October. During her stay in Copenhagen the popular TV host produced a programme on Denmark and the Danes which made her conclude that Danes might just be the happiest people on Earth.

According to Oprah Winfrey, a simple life and a strong social system make Denmark one of the best places on Earth to live. Among the things that she admired most about our country were the free health care, education and long leave for new parents. The fact that the social system allows for both long maternity and paternity leave periods when a child is born was simply one of the most impressive aspects of daily life in Denmark in Oprah's opinion.

The first 20 minutes of the one-hour long programme featured a tour of Copenhagen, with curious Danes in close tow of the international celebrity. Oprah also talked to a couple of the happy Danes, asking a mother "Don't you have child molesters in Denmark?" when she heard that Danes have a habit of leaving their babies unattended in the prams outside cafes. "I'm sure we do, "said the mother, "but I've never heard of anyone stealing a pram in Denmark".
