Dear Visitor
Welcome to the Danish Embassy homepage in Jordan. The Danish Embassy was formally established in Amman, Jordan on September 1st 2007. It was my privilege to hand over my credentials to His Majesty King Abdullah II on September 6th as the first residing Danish ambassador to the Kingdom of Jordan.
I and the embassy staff look forward to carrying out our duties in this wonderful country, which in many ways resembles Denmark. Jordan and Denmark are both kingdoms. And while Jordan and Denmark are tiny in area and population and have only few natural resources, both our countries have achieved impressive development by focusing on creativity and self sustainability based on good educational systems and engineering. Of course there are differences in approach and development between Denmark and Jordan – but why not learn and be inspired by our different experiences.
The embassy will be focusing exactly on this – to promote and demonstrate what we in Denmark are good at: Building Democracy, respecting human rights, obtaining economic efficiency and creating environmentally sound and sustainable growth just to mention a few issues that comes to mind. We will try to do this together with our Jordanian friends and partners. You will be able to read more about our work on the homepage as we get things up and running. You will also be able to read and inquire about existing projects being carried out by our Danish collaborators in cooperation with Jordanian and regional Arab partners.
A final word on a topic that is close to my heart: Denmark will be hosting a very important global meeting on climate change in 2009. The meeting will focus world attention on issues that is of paramount importance for all of us whether we live in the Middle East, Latin America, Europe or elsewhere. Among other issues the world will discuss how we can all limit emission of green house gasses and limit the consumption of energy while maintaining economic growth. Denmark has and still is in the forefront on this issue – during the last 25 years we have had an increase in the GNP of 70% while our energy consumption has remained stable (zero per cent growth during the same period). And at the same time we have been focusing on renewable energy and developing clean energy sources like wind turbines. Other countries who experience sustained growth, like Jordan, might achieve the same results to the benefit of both the environment and the economy, and we would like you to be inspired by our example.
